What does LGBTQIAP+ stand for?

It’ll score you a notable 22 points in Scrabble (minus the ‘plus sign’), but what does LGBTQIAP+ stand for?

L – Lesbian
G – Gay
B – Bisexual
T – Transgender
Q – Queer and/or Questioning
I – Intersex
A – Asexual and/or Allies
P – Polyamorous and/or Pansexual
+ – Associated sexual and gender identities.

You may also see GLBT (“gay” before “lesbian”), LGBTQ+ (Queer and associated) as well.

The acronym has evolved considerably, although is most often seen as simply LGBT, or LGBTQ with the “Queer” being used to encompass the surrounding Gender/Sexual Identities not associated with LGBT.

The addition of A (Asexual) and I (Intersex) came with embracing the identities often associated, but not in any official capacity, of Asexual and Intersex people. The addition of P for Polyamory (pansexual, it has been argued, could be covered by Queer/bisexual) is contested by some Queer groups, who see Polyamory as a distinct cause away from sexuality and gender; however, polyamorous couples have often been found within Queer communities.

It is also important to note that not every Queer community considers the A to have any relevance to Allies, but only Asexuals.
